How I Took My Health Back Through Food

I didn’t feel good, and I was always tired. I went to my medical providers thinking prescriptions were the answer to feeling better. I ended up with a prescription for acid reflux, two inhalers for asthma, and daily allergy medicine. Frequent sinus infections, asthma flareups, and chronic fatigue were normal for me.  I exercised but was feeding my body a lot of fast food, drank Diet Mt. Dew, and regularly consumed alcoholic beverages. The food we had at home mostly came out of a package.  Failing to see the obvious, I accepted my symptoms as typical and influenced by genetic predisposition. Finally in 2015, I was in my early 40’s and found myself “sick and tired of being sick and tired”. I was taking the medicines prescribed to me and exercising but I still didn’t feel good.  For a couple of years, I saw how my sister had made diet and lifestyle changes and was experiencing better health. It was time to see if that was really the answer. I decided to do Dr. Mark Hyman’s 10-day detox and then followed it with less processed foods, no sodas, more nutritious whole foods and more water. The dots started to connect, and it was evident that the foods I was choosing to nourish my body were either healing or inflammatory.  The reflux diminished, and I was able to wean myself off Prevacid. Asthma flare-ups were less frequent, allergies were better and most importantly I was feeling better.

“Let Food Be Thy Medicine.” It seemed so evident, yet my medical providers had never asked me about the food I was eating, and I had blindly accepted that genetics were my destiny. But it was the food! Changing what I ate allowed me to eliminate one medicine, and drastically reduce the others. I was no longer stuck feeling “sick and tired”. My personal health journey has not been a straight path, and I have had a few derailments along the way.  I use every day as an opportunity to learn from yesterday and make better choices today.  When you know better, you do better! And when you do better, you feel better!

My passion to learn more about health and wellness, not only for myself and my family, but also for you, led me to take a course in Nutritional Leadership, through Dr. Axe Nutritional Leadership Institute, followed by the Forks Over Knives Ultimate Cooking Course. Most recently, I have completed a comprehensive Functional Nutrition certification through the Functional Nutrition Alliance. This brings me to where I am today, but it doesn’t stop there. I continue to further my knowledge so that I can share it with you and empower you to make the greatest investment of all time – your health!
